Quick Facts

The calculation for the projections provided for dates between 1994 and 2019 is based on the 2007 birth and death rates. Migration is not included in the calculation.

Due to urbanization, the population for cities and towns are expected to be higher than the projected counts.

The Somali region reported unusually high number of child deaths for the 2007 census. Hence the population for the region is expected to be higher than the projected counts.

Projection Methodology

The methods and assumptions used to project the 1999 population from the 1994 population data are provided below.

  • The 2007 birth and death rates are used for all the projection years calculations.
  • The Central Statistics Agency published all the population count, the birth rate, and death rates in 5 year age ranges (0-4, 5-9, 10-14, ..., 90+). Because of that, the 5 year age ranges are used as the basis for the calculations.
  • The 1999 population for the 25-29 age range is the same as the 1994 population for the 20-24 age range minus the deaths in those 5 years. The death rate changes each year. However, it is assumed that the rate of change is constant. That means, the death rate starts with that of 20-24 and incrementally increases or decreases to reach the death rate for the 25-29 age range. The deaths for urban female, urban male, rural female, and rural male are calculated separately for each district.
  • The above assumptions are used to calculate all the age ranges starting from 5-9 up to 90+.
  • To calculate the 1999 population for the 0-4 age range is quite complicated. In addition, the accuracy of this number significantly affects the projection count.
  • The number of births between 1994 and 1999 constitue the 1999 population for the 0-4 age range. The births for each age group of female is calculated separately. Each year the female population in each age group reduces because some of them will die unfortunately. In addition, of the children born each year some of them will also die unfortunately. Both the birth rate and death rates change each year. But the rate of change is assumed to be constant. The calculation is done for both sexes separately. Even though the birth and deaths rates are given at the zone level, the calculation is done for each district separately.
